Retro Screensavers

The screens we stared at while doing absolutely nothing. Pick a classic, hit fullscreen, and let your monitor travel back to 1997. Click the screen (or press any key in fullscreen) to "wake up".

How It Works

Five faithful homages to the golden age of idle screens, drawn live on an HTML canvas:

  • Starfield — fly through space forever, warp-speed style
  • DVD Bounce — the logo drifts, bounces, changes color... will it ever hit the corner perfectly? (Yes. Eventually. People cheer.)
  • Mystify — bouncing polygons with trails, straight from the Windows 95 settings dialog
  • Matrix Rain — green glyphs cascading like it's 1999 and you just took the red pill
  • Pipes — ever-growing plumbing that slowly fills the screen, then starts over

Fun fact: screensavers originally existed to stop CRT phosphor burn-in; a static image left too long would ghost into the tube permanently. LCDs made them pointless, which is perhaps why we love them: they are pure decoration. Tip: fullscreen one of these on a spare monitor and enjoy the ambience while you work.
